YOU COULD NEVER TELL THE GOOD GUYS FROM THE BAD BECAUSE EVERYONE WAS INVOLVED.
A feature film based on a true story
Gary is a handsome, young Vietnam vet who returns home to Chicago after serving with undiagnosed severe PTSD. He is made a deputy sheriff and finds himself ensnared within the Chicago Political Machine and ultimately becomes a bodyguard, confidant and protector of the powerful City Treasurer, Richard O’Reilly. O'Reilly is gay and secretly married to another man — a political death sentence for the time. The baby-faced deputy, Gary turns into a hardcore enforcer when O'Reilly is repeatedly marked for extortion. Roy, O'Reilly’s marriage partner opens a failing business and quickly burns through all O’Reilly’s money. In desperation, O'Reilly turns to Chicago Outfit bankers to help fund the failing enterprise. O’Reilly is now owned by the Outfit, who feels far more comfortable putting Gary in charge to collect their monies. Gary becomes the man with the broad shoulders, who can make anything happen. Not only is this kid a magnet for women, men, drugs and violence, he is also a target for law enforcement and would be mob/political associates that are maniacally jealous of his power in a city that politically rules the country.
